Act and Reenact: Daniel Trejo

I first intended to draw Steven Seagal, because my dad likes this actor. But I’m not a huge fan of Steven. I was thinking, which badass actor I like? And came up with Daniel Trejo. I don’t know all his movies, but I saw him in Sons of Anarchy so I’m allowed to draw him. With Steven Seagal you see the badasness is acted, but if you read the biography of Daniel Trejo, you understand why he doesn’t play badass, he just is.

Five Minute Sketch 91: Botsauto

This weekend there’s another long weekend. Tomorrow it’s Pentecost and for that reason Monday is a day off. In a lot of cities in Belgium there are fairs. And one of the most popular attractions at Belgian fairs are bumper cars. Bumper Cars are beloved by teenagers and the place to be to meet new friends.

Act and Reenact: The Wizard of Oz

I didn’t really know which actress to cover for today. But out of the blue The Wizard of Oz popped in my mind. I saw this movie a few times when I was little and I really liked it although I didn’t really get the story. It’s already been a while since I saw this movie and when I looked up the imdb-page, I couldn’t believe this movie is from 1939. I drew Judy Garland, who played Dorothy, the main character.

Tomorrow there will be sketches, I have already scanned them, I only have to write a post about it. And I will take my time for it and not rush it like I did todays’ posts So see you tomorrow!

Five Minute Sketch 90: Inline Skates

I’m about to leave, but I just found a little space to post my sketches (of yesterday, but I hadn’t had a scanner around). When I was a kid I like to skate around. Then puberty came around and the skates disappeared. Last year I bought some inline skates again and this weekend I’m planning to use them again (I only skate in summer, so it’s been a year). So I drew one of my skates (not my picture).

The Garden of Earthly Delights

I can’t scan my sketches today, but they’re done and laying next to me. In the meanwhile I thought, maybe I have to post something else as a sweetener. So I decided to post something about one of my favorite paintings. I’m not an art expert and I don’t know a lot about it. But I try to visit an art museum once and a while. I first saw a replica of this painting during an exhibition about a photo collections of a Belgian writer.

I’m talking about The Garden of Early Delights by Hieronymus Bosch. I never saw the painting in real life, but if I ever visit Madrid, I’m going to take a visit to the Museo Nacional del Prado.

The Garden of Early Delights

The things I like about the painting is the surrealist scene, which I like in paintings, after all Belgium is the country of Rene Margritte. The second thing I like in the painting is the “crowdedness”. You can watch the painting for an hour and still discover new things or relations between several scenes in the painting.

If you know similar paintings or if you can name this style – is it just Surrealism? – please leave a comment behind.

Act and Reenact: Honey, I Shrunk The Kids

When I was little Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was a movie I could really enjoy. The idea of being little as an insect intrigued me and the movie showed me how it would be. Main character in the movie is played by Rick Moranis, who apparently stopped acting after his wife died from cancer. I didn’t do any measurements because I came home quite late and was eager to jump in bed.

Five Minute Sketch 89: Holy Mary

I’m going to post my sketches in a quicky, because it’s getting late. As I said before, I took some pictures of Holy Mary statues in my long weekend. Today is the perfect day to post them, because there’s another holiday coming and I got another stretched weekend. Tomorrows’ post will be posted on Friday. Or rephrased, tomorrow no posts, but Friday I’ll post some sketches. I didn’t set up my scanner the right way, so todays’ sketches will be a little flat, sorry for that.

Act and Reenact: Lola Rennt

Admittedly I never saw Lola rennt (in English known as Run Lola Run), but because I wanted to stay in the German movie scene, I’ve chosen this one. Again in college, someone made a little parody on this movie during our school trip in Berlin and filmed it. I still remember it vividly, that’s why I decided to draw Lola, real name: Franka Potente.

Five Minute Sketch 88: Satellite Dish

I already told you I started running again. I use a polar heart monitor, because I’m working on my health level in the first place, so I never bought a polar device to measure the distance I ran. But now I have a smartphone and because I see feeds from friends using Runkeeper and similar apps, I decided to try out myself. I read some critic concerning the precision of the distance in Runkeeper, so I decided to download Strava too and use them both for my running exercise of today. In addition I added My Tracks too, so I could compare three different apps.Today was an interval day, in my case that is running at a normal heart rate (152 today) for 3 minutes and then making a sprint for 30 seconds.  The results were all different, but the difference was negligible. According to My Tracks I ran 3, 67 km (kilometers), according to Strava I ran 3,6 km and according to Runkeeper I ran 3,64 km. For now I’m going to use Runkeeper, because of the usability and the fact it has more offline features. But maybe in the future I’ll find an alternative.
